Cajun Navy on Location in Mississippi Following EF4 Tornado

There are three certainties in life; death, taxes, and the Cajun Navy helping those who need it most.

The United Cajun Navy is assisting people in the small towns of Rolling Fork and Silver City, Mississippi after tornadoes leveled the communities Friday night. UCN founder and president Todd Terrell said they’ve shifted from search and rescue to distributing supplies and food.

“First responders in the areas are affected too, we need to help them as well. So, our main thing today is getting supplies into communities, four-wheelers, ATVs, and stuff kind of deliver it door-to-door,” said Terrell.

Terrell said they are asking the public to help by either donating money or supplies and you can find a wish list of supplies on their Facebook page. He said their mission is far from over. “Last night they had another round of storms that came through and it kind of affected some other communities as well. And I think they have some more bad weather coming. This has just been pouring salt on an open wound for those people up there,” said Terrell.

Terrell said the devastation is comparable to the 2010 Joplin, Missouri tornado and the 2021 Mayfield, Kentucky twister where whole communities were leveled.

At least 26 people were killed in Mississippi from the EF4 twister, and Terrell said it’s a miracle there weren’t more fatalities. He credits the ability to use heat sensors in planes and drones.

“They’re able to see heat signatures on who may still be alive inside of these rubbles so we’re able to get volunteers in and help the people that may not have made it otherwise without the new technology,” said Terrell.

Terrell asked the public for prayers. More severe weather is forecasted for the area today and throughout the week.
